You never know from where your next model will turn up.
My friend and fellow portrait artist Susan Carlin painted a model using Skype as the window to the model. She broadcast the painting on her uStream show, and I thought it was quite a clever idea. The model stood in front of her own laptop webcam for about 2 hours while Susan painted from her monitor some 1500 miles away.
Sarah A., the model, is also a viewer of my broadcast, and also has her own broadcast channel, so I asked her if I could try something like that but with my favorite single-source window lighting which we would have to figure out from opposite coasts. We hooked up via Skype to "test it out" and due to complications at both ends, I only managed to get a screen capture or two and we had to go.
I used this screenshot to paint from in this last painting of 2009. This was a casual show, and the last day of the year, so there was a bit of white wine involved. :-) I never got to try what Susan Carlin did, which was much cooler on the coolness scale. But I got to paint Sarah.
And that's pretty cool.
It's interesting to have painted a model I have never met. Maybe someday we will.
