What lurks in the hearts of everyday shadows?
The Shadow Knows.
No seriously, what exactly is going on with shadows? When there is a single-source spotlight on an object, what can you expect the shadow to do? Is it predictable? If you knew, would it help you see better?
What if you cannot tell whether the shadow's edge is soft or hard?
What if the lighting is soft?
If you "know" in your head what light and shadow do, you can "decide" when you don't know. You use this knowledge to "justify your artistic license" (and avoid having it revoked by the Art Police)!
What you will learn, by discussion and demonstration
Far from just theory, this is the stuff I rely on in difficult moments while drawing and painting, whether color or monochromatic.
- "The Egg Principle" in Single Light Source environments.
- How shadows define mass and form
- How Shadows and Highlights reveal texture and define surface
- Cast shadows vs Form or Core shadows and how they reveal or emphasize volume
- Using 2 light sources "the right way" to your advantage in drawing and painting.
- Using scene shadow to emphasize depth in your live set-ups or photographic reference.
- What do the edges and values of shadows reveal about the masses, the light source and the ambient condition.
- What happens to color within shadows
- indoors
- outdoors
- in warm light
- in overcast settings
- How bright/intense is a reflected light?
- What is "Shadow Shorthand" for quick-drawing events, such as short-pose figure or head sketching?
- Much more. Everything I was taught, and everything I have learned to date in over 32 years as a pro artist.
Included in the course

- Supporting photos as reference to help understand
- Images of my charcoal work
- Charcoal and paint deomnstrations
- Question and Answer periods (during live session only)
- Unlimited access 24/7 to the online videos recorded during the session by returning to Dave the Painting Guy website and logging in with your secret password. These videos are higher quality and easier to access than the broadcast or uStream-stored content.
How it will improve your work
- You will be able to see more clearly for artistic purposes
- You will be able to make educated guesses when you just don't know for sure
- You will use your shorthand knowledge to simplify your edgework to make your work more quickly-read and understood
- You'll mix odd greys and browns in shadow based on what you know, and rely less on what you see (or what you've heard)
- You'll be able to see the truth of it all, and abandon erroneous information you have been taught
- Dave will explain it all to you in his clear, concise, memorable teaching manner
